People and ownership

Shareholder

Updated 2026-06

A shareholder is a person or entity that owns shares in a company, and shareholders and their holdings are shown on the public record.

Where shares are held through other companies or trusts, the public record shows the legal owner but not always the person who ultimately controls them.
