What the NZBN is
The New Zealand Business Number, or NZBN, is a unique identifier for a business in New Zealand. Companies get one automatically, and sole traders and partnerships can get one too. It is the cleanest way to refer to a specific business without confusion over similar names.
What the company number is
The company number is assigned when a company is incorporated on the Companies Register. Every registered New Zealand company has one. It identifies the company on the register and stays with it for life.
Why both matter for a check
Names can be similar, and trading names can be shared. Identifiers cannot. When you record the NZBN and company number alongside the legal name, you remove the risk of checking the wrong company or paying the wrong one.
If a contract or invoice gives a trading name only, ask for the legal name and NZBN. A legitimate business will have both to hand.
Questions and answers
Is an NZBN the same as a GST number?
No. The NZBN identifies the business. The GST number relates to tax registration. A business can have an NZBN without being registered for GST.
Can two companies share an NZBN?
No. Each NZBN is unique to one entity, which is what makes it useful for confirming exactly who you are dealing with.
